Who is Cush?

  What/Who is Cush?

Many biblical references to the people and land of Cush help us trace back into thegenealogies and identify of their modern day descendants. The name Cush means 'black'. In the Bible, it is the name of a son of Ham and the name of the territory occupied by his descendants. The territory of Cush was referred to as the southern limit of Egypt (Ezekiel 29:10). It was a 'nation whose land, rivers divide' (Isaiah 18:7).

The gift-bearing people of Cush are described as a 'nation tall and smooth, to a people feared far and wide, a powerful and oppressive nation...' (Isaiah 18:7). The people of Cush were summoned to bring offerings to the LORD of Hosts and even today the call to worship still stands. The LORD Christ continues to bid them to come in united submission to God and ascend Mount Zion, where the Name of the LORD Almighty, Christ Jesus dwells. With the eyes of faith, we also envision the people of Cush coming to the New Jerusalem bringing gifts of homage to Christ (Isaiah 18:7)

Today, many historians believe that the people of Cush are the ancient Nilotic people. It is the largest tribes in Sudan: Dinka and Nuer who best fit this description, and are undisputedly rooted in the Nilotic languages. From the thorough research compiled by Mark Nikkel (in his excellent book called Dinka Christianity, Paulines Publications Africa, 2001), he concludes that the Nilotes and their ancestors were the earliest inhabitants of Sudan.

NOTE: Cush4Christ is not seeking to limit the breadth of our ministry to the Dinka and Nuer people but to extend in the future (as God enables us) to all l those who live in the land 'where the waters divide'.
